Almost 1000 years old, the only remnant of St. Elisabeth's hospital, (founded around 1080 by Count Henry III) is the Roman gate on Brusselsestraat. This gate dates from 1222. Perhaps the oldest stone carving in Leuven can be found on the right side of the Roman gate as you enter.
